INSTALLATION:
Users with House Mouse diskettes should substitute the below
installation directions with those on the disk label. It
is prudent to always virus scan new files before and after
installation prior to running a new program.
1. The Microsoft VBRUN300.DLL file is a runtime library required to
run all Visual Basic v3.0 applications like House Mouse v2.0.
This file was excluded from the download version of House Mouse,
specifically from the compressed file HMV2W.ZIP. This apparent
glaring omission is because many users already have VBRUN300.DLL
on their PCs, by virtue of using other Visual Basic v3.0 appli-
cations. Unfortunately, this file is quite large -- triple the
size of House Mouse v2.0! The exclusion facilitates efficient
electronic distribution of House Mouse (think of the savings in
connect charges for downloaders). While runtime omission
appears to be a common practice, this method requires extra
user diligence during the installation, as described below.
If you are not sure if you have the VBRUN300.DLL file on your PC,
proceed with the install. If the file is absent, the install
program will display an error message about not finding
VBRUN300.DLL. If you get this error message, obtain the file
from a BBS, especially the one from which you got HMV2W.ZIP.
NOTE: The VBRUN300.DLL must be placed in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory for House Mouse to work.
If you do have the file then please disregard this runtime
discourse. The above is just another piece of PC lore that
again proves computer usability is yet in its infancy. (We hope
that the attention given to the House Mouse v3.0 user interface
offsets this installation inconvenience.) Happily for those who
have House Mouse diskettes from Kestrel Computing, the runtime
file is included. For the faint of heart, such diskettes may be
obtained on by ordering and pre-registering the program from
Kestrel Computing Company, Inc.
2. Uncompress the .ZIP file (PKZIP v1.01 was used to create the ZIP
file).
3. For safety sake, virus scan the unzipped files.
4. From the Windows Program Manager, choose File Run and enter
SETUP. The SETUP program will perform the installation.
5. You are encouraged to distribute HMV2W.ZIP to your friends and
favorite BBS's -- that's why its called 'shareware'! The instal-
lation program lets you indicate a destination directory for House
Mouse (C:\HM2 is suggested). You then may wish to delete the
directory which contains the unzipped install files.
Upon installation completion, you should have the VBRUN300.DLL and
SPIN.VBX files in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. HM2.EXE and
HM2.HLP should be in a directory (\HM2 is recommended). This is
the minimal configuration for successful use of HOUSE MOUSE v3.0.
The FILE_ID.DIZ, README.TXT and SETUP.EXE may optionally be stored
in the House Mouse directory, however, these files are not necessary
to run the program. HMV2W.ZIP is also unnecessary to run the
program. You may upload this program and share it with other users.
Please do not alter this file, otherwise the install program might
not work as described.
That completes installation.
*******************************************************************
Important:
Alteration of these files is strictly prohibited. Feel free to
distribute the compressed file (HMV2W.ZIP), which must contain
the above listed six files.
This program must be distributed without charge, except for a
nominal distribution cost, unless written permission is obtained
from Kestrel Computing Company, Inc. This program is not public
domain and remains the copyrighted product of the Kestrel
Computing Company, Inc.
The House Mouse v2.0 anti-virus validation codes are registered on
the McAfee BBS -- (408)988-5190, 81N. You may compare these codes
with your results of the McAfee VALIDATE.COM program to determine
file integrity (i.e. that the program is virus free.) Kestrel also
may be contacted for the codes (see phone number below).
Note: A Visual Basic application, HOUSE MOUSE v2.0 requires
Microsoft Windows 3.X or higher running in standard or
enhanced (386) mode and the Microsoft Runtime file VBRUN300.DLL.
******************************************************************
We hope that our commitment to quality encourages users to become
our customers! Again, please register the program if you keep it.
Good luck in house hunting or refinancing!
